I saw from a previous post that some people were looking for an app that records streaming video straight from the ipad. I don't usually need this, but I kind of took this on as a personal challenge...because I have nothing better to do at 11 p.m. at night, right? Snort.
Well, I did some research and one of the main reasons that you can't find these easily through the iTunes app store is because...this is a lot like the original dv recorders that would actually allow you to burn dvds of your favorite shows and movies. Wasn't illegal, but most tv networks weren't thrilled about it and they've since replaced all those tivo/hopper models with recorders that don't burn permanent copies anymore--it's all stored with a limit on how many shows you can save and keep. Itunes has always bowed to the wishes of the copyright holders, even if it's a tad irritating, like drm protection on music. Grrr.
But that doesn't mean recording apps aren't buried in their store. I found a few specifically creating to record streaming video directly on your ipad. The first is iBold Downloader, which is currently free. What I liked about this is that you can download via Cloud or Dropbox. There is Video Tube, which is created specifically to record YouTube videos. It's also free, but I read some people have issues with the volume. There is also HD Video Downloader, where I found the most feedback about it's ability to save the videos as high res 1080p videos, which is a plus for showing in the classroom. There's also Video Downloader Super Lite, which I've read works very well, but doesn't have the most intuitive interface. All of these apps are free. Roadshow is another free app that will record everything but Youtube videos...but you will gain unlimited downloads and be able to remove adds if you upgrade to the $5 version.
Hopefully this list helps. If it does, please write me a comment. If you actually download one and have luck with it, please let us know. I'd like to get to know people in discussions here since I teach during the meetings, and right now it seems a little quiet around here! :)
IBold Downloader isn't in the App Store and none if these save flash videos. Bummer.
ReplyDeleteLook up iBolt Downloader instead of iBold.
