iPad talks to PC

Hello everyone,

I wanted to pass along the progress on my efforts to use the iPad to teach chemistry.  Initial efforts have been to download practical apps from the Apps Store related to chemistry.  Lots of free apps but very little relevance and application.  Still, I was able to get a couple of good apps: (1) chemical drawing program that can be used to teach students how to draw molecular organic compounds, (2) Lewis dot structures program: this is one of the hardest concepts in Chemistry and I think it will make it easier for students to understand chemical bonding and how compounds are put together, (3) a game similar to Mahjong with chemical formula matching to ion charges.

Also, spent a bit of trying figuring out a way to mirror what is on display on the iPad to my PC and then to the projector.  I downloaded the Reflection software program onto my PC and now I am able to mirror on my laptop.  The only issue that I am running at ARC is with the wireless which seems to give some difficulties.  I can run the mirroring program at home with my home wireless network.

Anyone has a suggestion on how to get the mirroring to work at ARC?

Unfortunately by the time I got all put together, my Chemistry class has moved beyond the topics I listed above and I am covering more Organic and Biochemistry.  Available apps for these topics are limited.

  1. Jorge,
On Thursday 10/25, we will be presenting the concept of the untethered iPad to the District Edtech Committee. We are hoping to get the conversation rolling about how we can do this effectively. If ARC had a separate wireless network for instructors using mobile devices, than the untethered iPad could become a reality!

  2. Thanks Marsha. Let me know the outcome. If it does not come to be true, I will get the AppleTV and the VGA adapter.
